About the Role

The Dispatcher performs specialized work in receiving emergency calls for service and dispatching police, fire, and EMS. This role utilizes highly technical computer-aided dispatch systems and multi-channel radio/paging consoles to process incoming emergency calls and coordinate emergency responder resources.

Responsibilities

  • Receive emergency calls for service.
  • Dispatch appropriate police, fire, and EMS resources.
  • Utilize computer-aided dispatch systems (CAD).
  • Operate multi-channel radio/paging consoles.
  • Process incoming emergency calls quickly, efficiently, calmly, and accurately.
  • Coordinate emergency responder resources.
  • Observe all local, state, and federal laws and established policies/guidelines.
  • Apply procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Guide and train temporary and/or regular employees.
  • Troubleshoot problems and issues.
  • Instruct others in work methods and procedures.
  • Manage access to Not Public Data strictly limited to necessary job duties.
  • Take reasonable measures to ensure Not Public Data is not accessed by unauthorized individuals.
  • Properly store Not Public Data according to Mower County employee policies and Minnesota or federal law.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • 3 or more years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

  • Ability to distinguish colors used on maps and consoles.
  • Clear articulate speech.
  • Ability to perform frequent turning/twisting, reaching, grasping and pinching.
  • Ability to operate 911 systems, 2-way radio, head sets, telephones, copy and fax machines.
  • Ability to operate multiple computer terminals simultaneously without confusion.
  • Ability to maintain constant attention to workstation and communications equipment.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism despite frequent contact with individuals who are distraught, angry and sometimes disrespectful.
  • Ability to handle traumatic and disturbing call content.
