About the Role

Austin Commercial is seeking a MEP Superintendent for its Austin, TX division. This role manages and schedules installations for mechanical, electrical/controls, HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection contractors, ensuring coordination with construction schedules. The position involves field supervision, temporary utility layout and design, and coordinating installations between trades to resolve interferences. The goal is to provide overall direction and control for the installation of various systems in projects ranging from high-rise offices to hotels, serving as the primary liaison with subcontractors, architects, owners, and city officials.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and oversees day-to-day field construction activities on assigned jobsite.
  • Manages overall jobsite safety, including implementation of safety plans and procedures.
  • Reviews record documents, submittals, shop drawings, and schedules to determine project scope, materials, manpower, and equipment needs.
  • Plans jobsite physical layout with the project manager, initiating startup activities like site security and utility hookups.
  • Designates areas for cranes, hoists, material storage, and parking.
  • Directs field engineers in jobsite survey and layout, ensuring dimensional accuracy verified by third-party surveyors.
  • Plans daily and weekly craft activities and detailed schedules, providing technical instructions to foremen and resolving plan ambiguities.
  • Establishes procedures for ordering self-performed building materials, supplies, and small tools with the senior most superintendent.
  • Inspects all field construction work, ensuring high-quality workmanship and promptly addressing and correcting deficiencies.
  • Provides technical guidance and assistance for construction problem-solving, investigating alternative methods and materials for efficiency.
  • Assists the senior MEP superintendent in evaluating schedule and cost impacts.
  • Assists the senior superintendent in developing manpower projection charts, monitoring labor costs, and investigating delays.
  • Assists the senior superintendent in developing equipment projection charts and monitoring equipment use, maintenance, and cost.
  • Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, codes, and company policies.
  • Manages scheduling of all governmental inspections required for occupancy.
  • Assumes responsibility for employee health and safety, including first aid, emergency treatment, OSHA inspections, and hazard correction.
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with owners, architects, consulting firms, and other stakeholders, resolving problems through negotiation.
  • Performs project close-out tasks, including punch lists, demobilization, and as-built documents.
  • Maintains detailed and accurate daily reports of field construction activities.
  • Administers the company's Safety & Health Manual.

Requirements

  • B.S. in construction management/science, engineering, or relevant discipline preferred, or equivalent combination of education (High School diploma) and experience.
  • 5-8 years of commercial construction field experience, including direct supervisory and MEP experience.
  • Successful completion of OSHA 30-Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training required (may obtain within first year of employment).
  • Proficient with reading plans and specs.
  • Ability to build and manage direct reports.
