About the Role

The Family Services Worker assists in the organization of client/family assistance. The primary focus of this role is Foodbank Intake, recruiting participants and organizing applications for Scotian Glen Camping Ministries, and assisting with the Seasonal Campaign as directed.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts initial intake assessments, determining clients’ immediate needs and providing appropriate support.
  • Evaluates client/protection issues.
  • Completes Feed Nova Scotia and The Salvation Army Link 2 Feed intake.
  • Refers clients to POH case worker.
  • Identifies when a client needs to be referred to the CFS Program supervisor for complex family services support.
  • Identifies clients' spiritual needs and provides appropriate support, including prayer and connecting with Sydney Community Church spiritual care.
  • Maintains confidentiality and keeps accurate client files and statistical records.
  • Assists in the organization, maintenance, and general cleanliness of the family services and food bank area.
  • Contributes to the Christmas campaign under the direction of the CFS program supervisor.
  • Maintains Standards and Procedures.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the Foodbank and Foodbank Area.
  • Works and maintains monthly reports.
  • Meets clients and takes care of the foodbank.
  • Meets the Feed Nova Scotia truck on scheduled days.
  • Unloads truck donations and puts them in appropriate sections (freezer, fridge, pantry, etc.).
  • Avoids food wastage by ensuring freezer/fridge foods go in the appropriate freezer/fridge.
  • Weighs all food donations and ensures proper documentation is completed for recording.
  • Packs orders and assists in the foodbank.
  • Records services provided in the system.
  • Meets with the Christmas Committee and participates in the planning and organizing of Christmas activities.
  • Assists in areas outside of normal responsibility as needed, working as a team.

Requirements

  • Submit a Police Record Check (vulnerable sector check) that is acceptable to The Salvation Army.
  • Meet eligibility requirements for the Canada Summer Jobs program, including age and legal status criteria.
  • Individuals requiring employer-specific work authorization (e.g., international students on study permits) are not eligible.
  • Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

Skills

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of individuals from diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Good computer skills with working knowledge of MS Office.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Good team player.
  • Good oral and writing skills.
