About the Role

The Design Director leads product development for fabric, wallcovering, and trim, driving the brand's aesthetic vision while balancing innovation, market relevance, and commercial success. This role oversees the design process from concept through production, ensuring collections reflect the company’s heritage and craftsmanship.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the creative vision and development of Schumacher Classic collections across fabric, wallcoverings, and trims
  • Drive creative concept development, color direction, pattern design, and material innovation
  • Create original design ideas
  • Reinterpret archival and heritage designs into elevated, commercially relevant collections
  • Collaborate closely with portfolio, merchandising, sales, and marketing teams
  • Maintain strong relationships with vendors to ensure successful execution of collections
  • Oversee all technical and creative aspects of product development, including CAD development, strike-offs, color approvals, and CFA
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the design team
  • Partner with senior leadership to define long-term creative strategy and product direction
  • Develop collections that balance artistic integrity, commercial viability, and brand vision
  • Present concepts and collection narratives to the executive team
  • Travel overseas to work onsite with vendors

Requirements

  • 8–10+ years of experience in textile design
  • Expert knowledge of product development and manufacturing processes and the interior design world
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to interpret, translate, and develop designs across a variety of print and woven techniques and constructions
  • Exceptional eye for and sensibility toward color
  • Proven leadership capabilities
  • Strong creative judgment and attention to detail
  • Desire to stay on top of design trends
  • Strong understanding of conventional printing techniques and complex woven constructions
