About the Role

Responsible for program planning and development, assisting in planning cultural and recreational activities in the New York City area to bring pleasure and broaden the outlook of parents and children. Must coordinate all steps of program planning within the agency's budget.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate trips outside the facility by working with staff, volunteers, mothers, and other service agencies.
  • Develop on-site program activities such as homework assistance, sports, games, and movies.
  • Strengthen informal relationships between parents and children through shared responsibilities and experiences.
  • Monitor, assist, and escort families in all activities.
  • Provide verbal and written feedback to professional staff to help assess the need for counseling and medical services.
  • Maintain a permanent resource file of affordable activities for children and adults.
  • Encourage and assist parents in coordinating and implementing their own activity ideas.
  • Research appropriate venues via the internet to expand educational and cultural horizons for parents.
  • Prepare written reports of all group activities as per agency requirements.
  • Collaborate with other departments and agencies to maximize resources.
  • Regularly assess the safety and well-being of clients.
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings and training seminars.
  • Perform groups for age-appropriate children as needed.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Social Work Supervisor/Assistant Director.

Requirements

  • High school diploma plus two (2) years of relevant training and experience, including experience working with children; or Bachelor's degree in health or human services.
  • Two (2) years experience working with children.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and experience with/knowledge of domestic violence within and against disenfranchised communities, including individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or HIV-affected, the elderly, and individuals with mental health issues.
  • Capacity to build and sustain relationships with children and their parents using trust-building, empathy, supportive assistance, and mediation skills.
  • Computer-literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to be flexible with schedule as needed.
