About the Role

The Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP) provides quality education from pre-kindergarten to grade 12, in French as a first language in a minority setting. The CSAP plays an active role in developing cultural identity and promoting the French language within the Acadian and Francophone context of Nova Scotia. The CSAP has 23 schools with over 6,500 students and more than 1,000 employees dedicated to student development.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a preventive approach in collaboration with the program planning team to design and implement programs for children and youth facing challenges in the school environment due to social, emotional, or behavioral issues.
  • Collaborate with families, administrators, classroom teachers, educational assistants, ÉcolesPlus staff, other specialized personnel, and community support organizations.
  • Assist students in developing social skills and self-control through community-based programs during the summer and after school.
  • Take the lead in building relationships and providing appropriate interventions for vulnerable children and youth affected by trauma, behavioral issues, or mental health problems.
  • Utilize data-informed interventions in socio-emotional learning and culturally and linguistically sensitive pedagogy.
  • Apply knowledge of early childhood development and its links to academic and social success within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
  • Collaborate on program planning to facilitate student academic and social success.
  • Apply effective mediation and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Work effectively in flexible situations, including home visits if necessary, to bridge the gap between home and school for student success.
  • Utilize current technologies to support students struggling with self-regulation or communication.
  • Work and communicate effectively with students.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development.
  • Ensure confidentiality.
  • Collaborate with teachers, educational assistants, administrators, and specialists to implement appropriate interventions and programs for assigned students.
  • Support educational assistants working with students identified with special needs.
  • Employ approaches such as functional behavior analysis.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the effective implementation of best practices and strategies, including positive reinforcement systems, visual schedules, and movement breaks.
  • Contribute to establishing a healthy and safe school environment by helping students adopt positive behaviors.
  • Maintain progressive records and take notes for students under care.

Requirements

  • Possession of a post-secondary diploma or certificate, such as the Nova Scotia Community College's Student Support Worker program or an equivalent college program for specialized educators.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of work experience with school-aged children and youth.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • First aid and CPR certification.
  • Non-violent crisis intervention training.
  • Mental health first aid for adults working with youth (national training).
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, with discretion and confidentiality.
  • Excellent knowledge of French and English (oral and written).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and orientation skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate with team members in a diverse environment.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle for job duties.
