About the Role
IF is seeking a Technical Director to help organizations design and build trustworthy AI-enabled products and services. This role involves shaping, supporting, and growing the company's technology approach in client work, balancing technical strategy with delivery, managing technical practitioners, and collaborating across multi-disciplinary teams to deliver prototypes and proofs of concept. The role also includes contributing to business development, client relationship building, and broader new business and marketing efforts.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic technical guidance across multiple projects, shaping the overall technology approach.
- Help project teams understand relevant technical opportunities, challenges, and trade-offs.
- Ensure a strong and coherent technical narrative within project work and articulate the role of technology clearly to clients.
- Support engineers and technical practitioners, ensuring effective collaboration and acting as the senior technical voice.
- Occasionally play a hands-on role in specific technical deliverables.
- Ensure project teams deliver high-quality technical deliverables aligned with agreed outcomes.
- Help qualify, shape, and respond to new business opportunities, identifying avenues to sell technical capabilities.
- Build relationships across industries to promote IF's technical capabilities to potential clients.
- Identify opportunities to leverage technical capabilities to extend existing work or start new initiatives.
- Contribute to IF’s thought leadership content through blogs, frameworks, and tool development.
- Ensure the company understands the role of technology in delivering impactful client work.
- Be accountable for hiring new engineers and technologists, building a high-quality technical capability.
- Lead the development of IF’s technical practice, creating necessary guidance, processes, and tools.
- Coach and provide regular feedback to teams, driving performance and supporting progression.
Requirements
- Engineering background with hands-on experience launching and supporting multiple digital products and services.
- Breadth of experience with different AI solutions and technologies, with a solid understanding of both theory and practice.
- Experience supporting and managing senior engineers/technical practitioners within multi-disciplinary teams.
- Confidence in shaping technical strategy and defining technical architectures.
- Experience in consulting and comfort leading client sessions.
- Experience coaching and developing a practice of technical practitioners.
- Ability to define a clear picture of good quality and implement processes/tools for consistent high-quality technical deliverables.
- Commercially minded with an understanding of aligning technology approaches with organizational strategy and budget.
- Track record of helping win new work for a consultancy.
- Interest in and experience of speaking at conferences, engaging in communities of interest, and contributing to open source projects.
- Low ego, compassionate individual who works hard within an environment that cares about its people and impact.
- Positive influence within work cultures, bringing focus and clarity to teams.
- Brilliant communicator, able to craft compelling stories, present work with clarity, and write succinctly.
