About the Role
PayPal is seeking a Credit Risk Manager to join the European and Australian Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) Risk Team. This role supports the execution of strategic BNPL partnerships with large merchants across Europe, acting as a bridge between commercial deal execution and risk management. You will design merchant-specific credit strategies based on a deep understanding of partner needs and user bases.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage data science projects, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with business goals.
- Develop and maintain data models, algorithms, and reporting systems to support data analysis and decision-making.
- Analyze complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights that drive strategic initiatives.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data needs and provide actionable insights.
- Ensure data quality and integrity through regular audits and validation processes.
- Mentor and guide junior data scientists, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- Influence the strategic direction of the BNPL portfolios, utilizing UK/European market expertise and analytically driven ideas.
- Design and own merchant-specific credit risk strategies, driven by deep analysis of each partner’s customer base, transaction behaviour, and risk profile.
- Work with P&L owners and stakeholders to analyse, propose, and implement robust strategies across the full BNPL customer lifecycle.
- Measure the P&L impact of credit strategies to optimise the mix of risk and revenue.
- Share insights with leadership on book quality and provide recommendations on risks and opportunities.
- Explore internal and external data sources — including credit bureau — to evaluate their contribution to the credit underwriting process.
- Work with operations, compliance, and legal teams to ensure strategies are operationally sound and meet applicable regulatory requirements.
Requirements
- Proven experience in credit risk management is a must, with in-depth knowledge of credit performance, data providers, credit and behavioural scoring, and industry best practices.
- 5+ years’ experience in credit and/or fraud risk management in consumer credit products (e.g. credit cards, instalment loans, or revolving credit); fintech background preferred.
- Strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to present technical findings to non-technical audiences.
- Proven ability to influence, collaborate, and build relationships across a matrixed, international organisation.
