About the Role

The Department Manager General Merchandise (GM) - Canada manages the General Merchandise department at a large store, overseeing employee activities to achieve financial and marketing objectives. This role coordinates sales promotions, assists customers, and leverages knowledge of Follett systems, industry trends, and the competitive landscape to drive sales and control expenses. The manager ensures compliance with company policies and collaborates with various support partners.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises department employees, including assigning and evaluating work, interviewing, hiring, and training.
  • Oversees Home Office-regulated Return-to-Vendor (RTV) receiving and scanning processes.
  • Assists customers in finding products.
  • Manages special order functions and customer notifications.
  • Partners to create and maintain a Hassle-Free customer service culture focused on solutions-based selling.
  • Builds partnerships with other store staff and campus organizations for promotional and special events.
  • Assists with off-site sales opportunities.
  • Conducts daily store walkthroughs to ensure proper stock levels, inventory placement, and customer service.
  • Manages in-store merchandise display from stockroom to sales floor.
  • Creates and maintains displays in compliance with company standards.
  • Executes Home Office-initiated markups and markdowns, analyzes financial reports, processes purchase orders, and approves invoices.
  • Partners with the Store Manager to execute promotions and sales, ensuring proper inventory levels.
  • May perform website maintenance and fill orders, maintaining price accuracy and merchandise availability online.
  • Responds to customer questions and issues, resolving escalated problems.
  • May manage the store in the store manager's absence or supervise other departments.
  • May open or close the store.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • 3-5 years of retail supervisory experience.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Previous supervisory/management experience.
  • General computer skills.

Skills

  • Knowledge of Follett systems and strategies (Included Program, Academic Tools, System Integrations, etc.)
  • Knowledge of the industry and competitive landscape
  • Solutions-based selling
  • Customer service
