About the Role
Ofcom is seeking up to two non-executive members to contribute to shaping regulation for the evolving communications landscape, bringing independent insight and diverse perspectives. The Content Board advises the Ofcom Board on content matters, including viewer and listener interests, and content-related issues across broadcast, video-on-demand, and online safety.
Responsibilities
- Understanding, analysing, and championing the voices and interests of the viewer, the listener, and citizen.
- Advising the Ofcom Board on decisions relating to content matters.
- Considering the interests of different parts of the UK.
- Advising on content-related matters that intersect between regulatory regimes for broadcast, video-on-demand, and online safety.
- Giving advisory opinions on Ofcom content standards decisions.
- Giving advice to the Executive on specialist matters, depending upon experience.
Requirements
- Application must include a CV and covering letter.
- Covering letter must give evidence of how you successfully meet the key skills and competencies.
- Covering letter should be no more than four sides of A4 in length.
- No previous experience of being a non-executive member is necessary.
- Must have personal integrity of a high order.
- Must ensure conduct accords with the Seven Principles of Public Life.
- Potential or actual conflicts of interest must be declared and discussed at interview.
- Members are required to act in accordance with the Board’s Code of Conduct.
- No Member of the Board may be directly employed by organisations that Ofcom regulates or licenses or derive the majority of their employment income from such a company.
Skills
- A good understanding of the principles and practice of content regulation, preferably gained from the industry side.
- An excellent understanding of broadcasting and video on-demand policy, content-related issues across different platforms, regulatory issues, the UK media policy landscape and relevant international context.
- An understanding of the needs and interests of viewers, listeners and citizens.
- Sound judgement and decision-making to ensure successful delivery in a highly complex organisation.
- Strong communication skills to make an effective contribution to the discussions of a high-level public body.
- Personal integrity of a high order.
- Demonstrable understanding of Ofcom’s need to make independent and impartial judgements under pressure.
- Experience working in sectors such as video streaming, podcasting, independent production and content creation.
