About the Role
The Associate Editor is responsible for soliciting, acquiring, and developing authors and books for the Harlequin Intrigue publishing program, ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality, marketable titles.
Responsibilities
- Acquire manuscripts that align with the publishing strategy and maintain high editorial quality.
- Collaborate with authors on editorial development, including proposal evaluation, revision guidance, and line editing.
- Oversee copy editing and manage author approval and alterations.
- Review submissions, respond to authors/agents, present projects, negotiate contracts, and monitor author payments.
- Develop new authors to meet publication standards.
- Provide editorial input on packaging design to highlight key selling features, working with Marketing and Art teams.
- Write and review back cover copy to create the most marketable package.
- Support the team and contribute to imprint strategy and growth.
- Represent the program/company at internal and external conferences.
- Maintain relationships with current agents and develop new ones.
- Manage specific initiatives, including trend-inspired IP projects, as directed.
Requirements
- An undergraduate degree.
- 3-5 years of experience in publishing, including acquisitions experience.
- Strong communication, writing, and editorial skills.
- Strong project management, planning, organizational, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
- Creativity, decisiveness, functional/technical knowledge, computer knowledge, adaptability/flexibility, customer orientation, and a drive for results.
- Ability to manage execution, prioritize, and pay close attention to detail.
- High level of creativity/innovation and functional/technical knowledge.
- Enthusiasm for mystery, suspense, and romance is a plus.
