About the Role

HarperCollins Publishers seeks an Assistant Designer with a passion for manga, manhwa, and manhua to join their graphic novel imprint, HarperAlley. The Assistant Designer will be an integral part of the team, working with creators, licensors, and in-house teams to design books that stand out in the graphic novel marketplace.

Responsibilities

  • Create and execute jacket and interior designs under general supervision.
  • Follow design workflow and adhere to tight deadlines.
  • Assist all phases of design and production processes, including preparing mechanical files, production-ready layouts, and coordinating with the production team.
  • Participate in group creative discussions.
  • Collaborate effectively with freelancers and creators.
  • Communicate with in-house departments to ensure smooth workflows.
  • Archive files into DAM.
  • Create dummies/mockups and sales materials for presentations.
  • Work closely with the Art Director to provide project and production status updates.
  • Provide general administrative support, including invoice processing, archiving files and contracts, and updating Biblio.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Proven ability to envision and execute outstanding design.
  • Keen eye for detail and experience working with production teams.
  • Strong typographic skills.
  • Understanding of manga, manhwa, and manhua book techniques, marketplace, and current trends.
  • Strong organization, time management, and communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, ClipStudio, and related applications.
  • Passion for graphic novels.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both Japanese and English is preferred.
  • Cover letters are strongly preferred.
