About the Role
HarperCollins Publishers seeks an Assistant Designer with a passion for manga, manhwa, and manhua to join their graphic novel imprint, HarperAlley. The Assistant Designer will be an integral part of the team, working with creators, licensors, and in-house teams to design books that stand out in the graphic novel marketplace.
Responsibilities
- Create and execute jacket and interior designs under general supervision.
- Follow design workflow and adhere to tight deadlines.
- Assist all phases of design and production processes, including preparing mechanical files, production-ready layouts, and coordinating with the production team.
- Participate in group creative discussions.
- Collaborate effectively with freelancers and creators.
- Communicate with in-house departments to ensure smooth workflows.
- Archive files into DAM.
- Create dummies/mockups and sales materials for presentations.
- Work closely with the Art Director to provide project and production status updates.
- Provide general administrative support, including invoice processing, archiving files and contracts, and updating Biblio.
Requirements
- 1+ years of relevant work experience.
- Proven ability to envision and execute outstanding design.
- Keen eye for detail and experience working with production teams.
- Strong typographic skills.
- Understanding of manga, manhwa, and manhua book techniques, marketplace, and current trends.
- Strong organization, time management, and communication skills.
- Thorough knowledge and experience with InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, ClipStudio, and related applications.
- Passion for graphic novels.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both Japanese and English is preferred.
- Cover letters are strongly preferred.
