About the Role

Discord is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead Safety Infrastructure Engineering. This role involves leading and growing two engineering teams focused on safety backend systems, driving the automation roadmap, and owning critical operational tooling. The position reports to the Senior Director of Safety and collaborates with various cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow two engineering teams covering safety backend: decision platform, classification systems, content understanding, intake and routing pipelines, and observability.
• Drive the automation roadmap with Safety ML, determining the appropriate use of AI and human oversight while maintaining quality, latency, and cost.
• Own queue routing and internal tooling for operations teams and vendor partners, collaborating with T&S Operations on quality assurance and system improvements.
• Consolidate fragmented systems onto infrastructure and establish high engineering quality standards for on-call, incident response, technical reviews, and ownership.
• Hire, coach, and grow senior leaders.

Requirements

• 5+ years as a software engineer with a strong backend and distributed systems background.
• 5+ years as an Engineering Manager, including 2+ years managing managers.
• Experience running 20+ engineers through multiple EMs.
• Strong infrastructure instincts and ability to participate in architecture discussions on event-driven systems, service migrations, and platform design.
• Fluent in AI and ML systems to partner credibly with an ML organization and make informed decisions about automation.
• Experienced working closely with ops or human-in-the-loop teams, understanding their workflows and building respectful tools.
• Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, with a history of effective partnerships across engineering, ML, data science, policy, legal, and product teams.
• Practical understanding of throughput, vendor management, and unit economics.
• Empathetic and experienced recruiter and coach.
• Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area.
