About the Role

Optiver's Austin facility is the main research, design, and manufacturing hub for custom trading system hardware. This role involves a quantitative researcher contributing to hardware R&D, utilizing quantitative skills and hardware affinity to conduct experiments, analyze data, and improve system designs and trading strategies.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and run experiments to characterize hardware like switches, routers, and trading systems at picosecond scales.
• Collaborate with execution researchers across offices to understand real-world versus lab performance of trading systems and strategies.
• Work with software engineers in the lab to scale and automate research for global application.
• Contribute to designing next-generation systems and strategies incorporating research findings.
• Provide expertise in lab measurements for production data analysis and capture improvement.
• Assist in lab operations, ensuring resources for upcoming experiments and managing work queues.
• Engage with suppliers to test and understand next-generation systems and measurement equipment.

Requirements

• Strong understanding of quantitative analysis methods and ability to present findings.
• Understanding of hardware functionality to form hypotheses, conduct physical experiments, and draw conclusions.
• Comfortable with hands-on work in a datacenter lab environment.
• Programming experience in low-level languages (C/C++, VHDL) is a strong plus.
• Experience with low-latency networks and related hardware is a strong plus.
• Preference for collaborative teamwork.
• Passion for problem-solving and results-driven.
