About the Role

Support the day-to-day operations of the Walama Unit, contributing to the delivery of high-quality, culturally appropriate legal services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. Build and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders to support the objectives of the Walama program. Manage a criminal law practice, providing legal advice and representation, including in complex matters. Contribute to culturally responsive, trauma-informed services that support the Walama List aims. Provide mentorship and support to junior legal staff, fostering a collaborative team environment and consistent delivery of high-quality legal work.

Responsibilities

Support the day-to-day operations of the Walama Unit.
Deliver high-quality, culturally appropriate legal services meeting the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and the community.
Build and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders, including courts, private practitioners, and legal assistance providers.
Manage a criminal law practice, providing legal advice and representation to clients.
Provide advice and representation in more complex criminal law matters.
Contribute to the delivery of culturally responsive, trauma-informed services supporting the aims of the Walama List.
Provide mentorship and support to junior legal staff.
Contribute to a collaborative team environment.
Ensure consistent delivery of high-quality legal work.

Requirements

Hold Australian or NZ citizenship, Australian Permanent Residency or a valid visa to work in Australia.
Undertake a Criminal Record Check and/or Conduct Service Check.
Be admitted or eligible for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW.
Provide a current NSW Practising Certificate before starting work.
