About the Role
This position is responsible for investigating, evaluating, reserving, negotiating, and resolving assigned Specialty Liability Bodily Injury and Property Damage claims. The role ensures quality claim handling throughout the claim life cycle, maintaining compliance with internal and external standards and state regulations. It also provides consulting and training resources, serving as a technical resource to the field and business partners. This role does not manage staff and is eligible for a sign-on bonus.
Responsibilities
- Handle assigned claims directly
- Provide quality customer service and ensure file quality
- Conduct timely coverage analysis and communicate with insureds
- Consult with Manager on Claim Coverage Counsel use as needed
- Investigate claims through contact with policyholders, accounts, claimants, law enforcement, witnesses, agents, medical providers, and technical experts
- Determine liability, damages, and contribution potential
- Interview witnesses and stakeholders, taking statements as appropriate
- Identify, select, and direct internal/external resources for claim evaluation (e.g., Subrogation, Risk Control, nurse consultants, fire/fraud investigators)
- Verify injury or property damage by obtaining and reviewing records and documentation
- Maintain claim files and document activities according to established procedures
- Utilize evaluation documentation tools per department guidelines
- Proactively create Claim File Analysis (CFA) adhering to quality standards
- Utilize diary management system for timely claim handling
- Evaluate liability and damages exposure at required intervals
- Establish and maintain proper indemnity and expense reserves
- Recommend appropriate cases for roundtable discussion
- Attend and/or present at roundtables/authority discussions for technical collaboration
- Share experience and knowledge of creative resolution techniques
- Develop and employ creative resolution strategies
- Promptly and properly dispose of all claims within delegated authority
- Negotiate claim disposition with insureds, claimants, or legal representatives
- Recognize and implement alternate means of resolution
- Manage litigated claims
- Develop litigation plans with staff or panel counsel, including discovery and legal expenses
- Apply litigation management through counsel selection, claim evaluation, and litigation strategy direction
- Track and control legal expenses for cost-effective resolution
- Effectively and efficiently manage allocated and unallocated loss adjustment expenses
- Attend depositions, mediations, arbitrations, pre-trials, trials, and other legal proceedings as needed
- Update appropriate parties with new facts and their impact on liability analysis and settlement options
- Recognize and timely refer cases to another level of claim professional based on severity/complexity protocols
- Appropriately handle personal and confidential information
- Fulfill specific service commitments to accounts as outlined in Special Account Communication (SAC) instructions
- Respond to inquiries from agents and brokers
- Represent the company as a technical resource, attending legal proceedings and acting within professional guidelines and state laws
- Provide mentoring and coaching to less experienced claim professionals
- Share accountability with business partners for quality results
- Evaluate all claims for recovery potential and handle/direct recovery efforts
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- 2 years of liability claim handling experience and/or comparable litigation claim experience
- Acquisition and maintenance of Insurance License(s) may be required within three months of starting the job
- Bachelor's Degree
- 5 years business experience
- Advanced level knowledge and skill in claim and litigation
- Basic working level knowledge and skill in various business line products
- Thorough understanding of the litigation process, relevant case and statutory law
- Extensive claim and/or legal experience and technical expertise to evaluate severe and complex claims
- Ability to make independent decisions on most assigned cases without supervisor involvement
- Openness to ideas and expertise of others, actively soliciting input and sharing ideas
- Thorough understanding of commercial lines products, policy language, exclusions, ISO forms, and effective claims handling practices
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills to understand, synthesize, interpret, and convey complex data
- Ability to adapt to and support cultural change
- Strong technology aptitude; ability to use business technology tools for research, tracking, and communication

Salary/Compensations
- $85,600.00 - $141,200.00
