About the Role
The Staff Accountant II performs intermediate-level accounting functions for affordable housing portfolios, including LIHTC, HUD, RD, and other subsidized housing programs. This role supports accurate financial reporting, ensures regulatory compliance, and assists with month-end and year-end close activities. The position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while collaborating with cross-functional teams. The ideal candidate has experience in property management accounting and a solid understanding of affordable housing compliance.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and post journal entries, including accruals and recurring entries, for affordable housing properties.
- Assist with month-end and year-end close processes for multiple properties and legal entities.
- Reconcile general ledger accounts, including bank accounts, reserves, security deposits, restricted cash, and other balance sheet accounts.
- Prepare and review monthly property financial statements and perform variance analyses.
- Support LIHTC, HUD, RD, and other regulatory reporting and compliance requirements.
- Assist with annual audits, cost certifications, and compliance reviews.
- Track, reconcile, and monitor replacement reserves and restricted cash accounts.
- Collaborate with property management teams on financial and operational matters.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and affordable housing program requirements.
- Identify and recommend improvements to accounting processes, controls, and reporting efficiencies.
- Provide guidance and support to junior accounting staff as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of accounting experience.
- Working knowledge of LIHTC and/or HUD programs.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and property-level accounting.
- Experience with property management accounting software (e.g., RealPage, Yardi, MRI, or similar systems).
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, formulas, and account reconciliations.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines across a diverse property portfolio.
- Experience with cost certifications and compliance audits.
- CPA or CPA candidate preferred.
- Experience with partnership accounting and fund accounting.
- Familiarity with state housing agency reporting requirements.
- Must be able to pass a 5-year background check.
- Must be able to pass pre-employment drug testing.
