About the Role
The Assistant Manager, Bars and Concessions supports the planning and execution of bar and concession operations across multiple event spaces at both Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall. This role ensures all bar and concession areas are properly set up, staffed, and stocked, while providing on-site leadership to deliver seamless service during events. The Assistant Manager fosters strong relationships with vendors, suppliers, internal departments, and staff to ensure exceptional patron service.
Responsibilities
- Support the planning and execution of bar and concession operations across multiple event spaces.
- Ensure all bars and concession areas are properly set up, stocked, and staffed for each event.
- Ensure staff are knowledgeable about the specifics of each event through briefings.
- Provide on-site leadership during events and ensuring smooth service delivery.
- Anticipate problems and initiate corrective action during events, keeping Management immediately informed of serious issues.
- Address and resolve patron and client/artist complaints in collaboration with other departments.
- Conduct pre-event briefings and post-event wrap-ups, including reporting and operational follow-up.
- Ensure daily maintenance and cleaning of Bars and Concession equipment, Point-of-Sale (POS) system and related storage areas.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organization, and equipment readiness.
- Administer and track time-off requests and leaves of absence.
- Contribute to the development of event staffing schedules.
- Coordinate availability and assignments for part-time, contract, and event staff.
- Supervise staff during events, providing real-time direction, coaching, and support.
- Assist with recruitment, training, onboarding, and performance management for frontline staff.
- Contribute to the annual Performance Reviews for the part-time staff.
- Foster a positive, team-oriented work environment focused on service excellence.
- Ensure product inventory controls are in place and being monitored and reconciled.
- Execute settlements at event close, ensuring all financials are reconciled and post-event reports are completed.
- Complete reports and administrative documentation in a timely manner.
- Assist with inventory tracking, ordering, and vendor coordination.
- Act as an effective role model with respect to professionalism, teamwork, patron service, and health and safety.
- Continually ensure exemplary patron service is provided by staff.
- Contribute to regular staff meetings to ensure effective communication and coordination.
- Identify opportunities to improve service delivery, efficiency, and guest experience.
- Develop solutions to systemic issues within the organization and contribute to the achievement of overall organizational goals.
- Offer insights into broader Bar and Concession operations trends, and identify new potential products, services and service delivery options.
- Contribute to an annual assessment of Bar and Concession equipment and make recommendations for improvement.
- Support a culture of accountability, safety, and collaboration.
- Ensure compliance with AGCO, OHSA, health, and fire safety regulations.
- Communicate corporate, health and safety, and human resources policies and ensure compliance.
- Promote and enforce responsible alcohol service practices.
- Ensure staff are trained in emergency procedures and incident response.
- Document and report incidents in accordance with organizational policies.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years management experience with revenue responsibility and accountability in the hospitality or food and beverage industry.
- Strong leadership skills with demonstrated ability to motivate and develop staff and foster a positive team environment.
- Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
- Ability to reach and bend frequently and lift up to 40 lbs.
- Standing and walking required for 50% to 100% on a scheduled shift.
- The ability to walk up and down a number of staircases each shift.
- Travel between and working at both venues will be required on an ongoing basis.
- Evening and weekend availability will be required depending on event schedules.
