About the Role

The Chief Schools Officer (CSO) is the senior leader accountable for school-level results across KIPP Capital Region. Reporting to the CEO and serving on the Executive Team, the CSO ensures alignment of systems, expectations, and accountability across all schools. The role leads the Schools Team, implementing systems to drive student achievement through disciplined execution, data-informed decisions, and rigorous evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Achieve annual New York State assessment goals in Reading and Math.
  • Achieve K–8 DIBELS benchmarks and literacy goals.
  • Ensure strong high school academic outcomes, including Regents passage rates, GPA targets, and SAT goals.
  • Develop and retain high-performing school principals.
  • Drive principal performance improvement based on the Bar of Excellence tier distribution.
  • Ensure retention of Tier 1 / Tier 2 principals.
  • Implement timely interventions for underperforming principals.
  • Ensure strong execution and alignment across school-facing systems and initiatives.
  • Implement the School's Team operating cadence and accountability systems.
  • Ensure coherence of Schools Team operating systems and leadership execution.
  • Supervise and coach Managing Directors of Schools.
  • Lead regional monitoring, diagnosis, and intervention for school performance.
  • Conduct rigorous evaluations and implement improvement plans for student outcomes.
  • Provide direct, evidence-based feedback to principals, including managing underperformance.
  • Steward the regional principal Bar of Excellence system.
  • Oversee successful school launches and monitor key performance metrics.
  • Accountable for the academic performance of seven schools.
  • Partner with the Chief Academic Officer to align academic vision and execution.
  • Execute KIPP CAP’s academic vision, instructional standards, and coaching systems.
  • Lead execution of instructional systems, including academic progress monitoring and coaching cycles.
  • Conduct observations to identify gaps, implement data-driven solutions, and improve teaching and learning.
  • Cultivate supportive, engaged, challenged, and valued learning environments.
  • Architect and steward a regional vision for school instructional culture and student experience.
  • Develop Principals and Principal Managers to lead culture effectively.
  • Oversee network-wide professional learning initiatives for leader and teacher effectiveness.
  • Set explicit success criteria for Schools Team-facing professional learning.
  • Partner on Principal-in-Residence and secondary leader development programs.
  • Serve on the Executive Team, contributing to organizational strategy.
  • Partner with the KIPP Foundation on academic priorities.
  • Co-lead the Board Academic Committee.
  • Present academic progress and school performance updates to the Board and stakeholders.
  • Commit to furthering anti-racism, equity, and racial justice.
  • Comply with all charter, federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Adhere to organizational policies and procedures, supporting mission, vision, and values.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution.
  • Minimum of 10 years of professional K–12 experience.
  • At least five years as a successful K–12 principal with demonstrated student achievement results.
  • At least two years of network, district, senior, or chief-level leadership experience with demonstrated student achievement results.
  • Experience teaching and leading in a high-performing charter or district school serving a similar student population.
  • Ability to work outside of business hours as needed.
  • Aptitude for creating and working in an inclusive environment.
  • Master’s degree in education or a related field (preferred).
  • Experience scaling leadership systems across multiple schools or campuses (preferred).
  • Experience managing differentiated principal autonomy and accountability systems (preferred).
  • Experience supporting high school leadership teams and graduation-cohort outcomes (preferred).
  • Deep familiarity with data-driven school improvement systems and instructional leadership practices (preferred).

Salary/Compensations

  • $200,000 - $225,000
  • Eligible for signing bonus up to 20%
