This Senior Staff Software Engineer role focuses on the Database Team, specializing in SQL Server and Oracle binary log reading and change data capture. Responsibilities include building new features for the data pipeline service, improving software architecture, and maintaining reliable service operation. The engineering team is dedicated to facilitating data analytics by delivering best-in-class schemas and clean data, contributing to community tools like Data Lakes and SQL-based Transformations, and ensuring Fivetran is a dependable and secure component of customer data infrastructure. The backend is built on Java, C, Postgres, and Kubernetes, while the frontend uses React and Typescript.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategies for reading SQL Server or Oracle binary logs to enhance data replication accuracy and efficiency.
  • Utilize reverse engineering techniques to understand and improve database binary log structure for better data integrity and replication performance.
  • Debug and analyze existing code used by hundreds of customers, including those operating large SQL Server clusters, to deepen understanding of data replication.
  • Analyze new features introduced by SQL Server and/or Oracle in recent releases and determine how to develop supporting features.
  • Participate in the maintenance and improvement of existing connectors and advocate for improvements across Fivetran's codebase and infrastructure.
  • Contribute to the process of moving a high-performance client-side service to the cloud and operating it at scale.
  • Develop software designs and a technical roadmap for the team, collaborating with Database Group leadership on the rolling 12-month technical roadmap.
  • Work closely with Customer Success and Go-To-Market (GTM) teams to assist in challenging customer situations, providing technical expertise and solutions.

Requirements

  • 10+ years programming experience in Java, C, or C++ languages, with a strong background in SQL Server.
  • Experience with SQL Server and/or Oracle binary log reading.
  • Ability to reverse engineer database binary logs.
  • Ability to write well-structured and performant code.
  • Capability to solve critical problems for large customers to minimize impact.
  • Ability to dive into previously written code and suggest improvements.
  • Understanding and ability to explain how to build high-performance systems and processes.
  • Proficiency in defining project requirements and designing software and infrastructure.
  • Enjoyment in mentoring and growing junior developers.
  • Analytical mindset to identify design flaws in existing systems and propose improvements.
  • Experience understanding customer requirements and breaking them down into engineering tasks.
  • Advanced knowledge in reverse engineering, particularly with database systems.
  • Experience working with open source projects with other collaborators.
  • Experience in data processing (ETL, ELT) and/or cloud-based platforms.
  • Experience in designing and developing file, event, application, or database connectors.
  • Experience working in a cloud environment utilizing AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, Docker, or BuildKite.
