About the Role

The Indigenous Relations Communications Assistant will support the development of communications materials, including webpages and social media content, to advance the Strategic Plan and the Zoo's mission. This role prioritizes animal well-being and fosters connections between people, animals, conservation science, and traditional knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the redesign of the Indigenous Relations webpage, including layout and content suggestions.
• Capture photos and videos, ensuring media release forms are completed and signed.
• Develop social media content for Indigenous Relations activities, programs, and events.
• Promote programming to guests through social media copy, signage, and verbal invitations.
• Assist with event and program setup and cleanup.
• Serve as a guide and point of contact for visiting Elders, Knowledge Sharers, and Indigenous groups.
• Collaborate effectively with all Zoo team members.
• Gather participant feedback to improve programming.
• Work closely with the Zoo’s Strategic Communications team on webpage and social media content.
• Travel to community events off Toronto Zoo premises may be required.
• Document programs and activities through photographs and video, ensuring media release forms are completed.
• Communicate and coordinate regularly with staff from the Zoo’s Strategic Communications team.
• Provide excellent customer service to guests.
• Share conservation messaging.
• Inspire sustainability awareness and actions.
• Follow all policies and standard operating procedures.
• Attend required training.

Requirements

• Experience with website design and/or graphic design.
• Experience with photography and video, with a good eye for capturing people and experiences.
• Interest or experience with traditional land-based knowledge and working in Indigenous communities.
• Interest in animals, plants, and conservation issues.
• Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
• Demonstrate an awareness of and commitment to sustainable practices.
• Highly motivated with the ability to initiate and carry out tasks with minimal supervision.
• Possess an unrestricted Class G driver’s license valid in the Province of Ontario with a good driving record (preferred).
• Lived experience as a First Nations, Inuit or Metis person (preferred).
• Ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and in good standing.
• Well-developed interpersonal skills.
• Strong communication skills.
• Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation is an asset.
• Knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems.
• Ability to work weekends, shifts, and holidays as scheduled.
• Ability to deal with staff and the public in a courteous and efficient manner.
• Capable of meeting the physical requirements of the position.
• Successful candidates may be required to provide a police reference check and/or driver’s abstract at their own expense.
• Candidates may be required to take a written and/or practical examination.
