About the Role
The Human Resources Generalist supports day-to-day human resources operations and provides guidance to employees and management on HR policies, procedures, and employment-related matters. This role supports recruitment, employee relations, performance management, compliance, reporting, and employee engagement initiatives while helping to foster a positive workplace culture and implementing the Strategic Plan.
Responsibilities
- Foster positive partnerships with Zoo leadership and employees to advise on HR and employee-related issues.
- Support recruitment activities including interview coordination, candidate communication, conducting interviews, reference checks, and hiring recommendations.
- Build and maintain collaborative working relationships with CUPE representatives and internal stakeholders.
- Maintain and update interview question databases and employee records in compliance with legislation and policies.
- Serve as a point of contact for employee inquiries regarding policies, workplace concerns, and collective agreement administration.
- Assist with employee relations matters including investigations, conflict resolution, and performance management support.
- Prepare HR reports as required.
- Support managers with coaching, employee development plans, and HR best practices.
- Ensure compliance with employment standards, workplace regulations, and internal policies.
- Support talent acquisition initiatives including co-op and internship programs, career fairs, community outreach, and recruitment events.
- Identify leading trends and best practices for human resources and support organizational change.
- Support human resources programs and contribute to the ongoing development of the team and strategy.
- Focus on continuously improving employee engagement.
- Engage in management meetings and advise proactively on strategy, policy, programs, and projects.
- Ensure legislative, regulatory, policy, and collective agreement compliance.
- Provide strategic and operational support for projects related to employee engagement, wellness, culture, and EDI.
- Assist with the preparation and delivery of training programs.
Requirements
- Post-secondary education in Human Resources or Labour Relations, or equivalent training and experience.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in an advisory Human Resources role.
- Experience working in a unionized environment.
- Ability to work weekends and holidays.
- Ability to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner.
- Capable of meeting the physical demands of the position.
- Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems, including Microsoft Office 365.
- Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation.
- Solid knowledge of employment and related legislation such as the Labour Relations Act, Human Rights Code, and Employment Standards Act.
