About the Role
The Planner Evaluation team addresses a key challenge in autonomous driving: measuring and improving the quality of the software that drives the car. We seek experienced data-minded software engineers and data scientists to enhance how we characterize and evaluate changes to the Onboard software stack (Planner, Perception, etc.). This role is ideal for those passionate about autonomous vehicles and leveraging complex data for decision-making.
Responsibilities
- Develop signals to measure Waymo driver performance and driving qualities using statistics, math, physics, algorithms, and machine learning.
- Utilize simulation and real-world driving logs to measure driving performance.
- Design and implement methods to connect onboard software changes with simulated outcomes.
- Champion code health and best practices in a complex codebase.
- Analyze data and recommend improvements for metric quality and interpretability.
- Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, statisticians, and leadership to deliver evaluation products and support data-driven decisions.
Requirements
- BS in Computer Science, Robotics, Statistics, Physics, Math, or a quantitative area.
- Strong self-motivation to navigate complex systems and complete open-ended problems.
- 4-7 years of industry experience.
- Experience navigating and modifying large codebases with languages like C++, Python, and SQL.
- Experience performing statistical analyses.
- Experience building data processing pipelines.
- Experience writing, reviewing, and merging code following industry standards for code health and maintainability.
- Quant/data fluency.
Skills
- C++ coding experience.
- Machine Learning experience.
- A/B experiment infrastructure experience.
- Experience building and validating metrics for quality measurement in complex systems.
- Exposure to ad-hoc data analysis tools for rapid modeling and prototyping.
- Experience in the AV industry.
