Responsibilities

  • Generate planning and design ideas, conduct research, document precedents, develop diagrams, render site plans, and contribute to graphic and visual production.
  • Learn and apply SOM City Design Practice protocols for file management, planning and design processes, and quality control standards.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of planning and urban design concepts, building typologies, utility and infrastructure systems, land development, and planning/zoning codes.
  • Enrich design concepts through knowledge, research, and proficient application of technical and visualization skills using appropriate software and tools.
  • Apply strong conceptual design ability to complex projects of varying scales, integrating interdisciplinary criteria.
  • Communicate effectively internally through written, oral, and visual means.
  • Actively collaborate at a project team level by developing, communicating, and evaluating ideas.
  • Manage time and workload to meet project deadlines with direction from project leaders and team members.
  • Actively participate as a junior member of the CDP Team.
  • Bring energy, enthusiasm, creativity, and a disciplined work ethic to the City Design Practice.
  • Become immersed in the SOM office through lectures, design reviews, site visits, and professional development.
  • Actively participate in the Year One Program (as appropriate).

Requirements

  • Professional Degree in Architecture, Planning, Urban design, or Landscape Architecture.
  • LEED accreditation preferred.
  • Interest in large-scale planning, mixed-use and transit oriented development.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and intensely collaborative professional environment.
  • Exhibit initiative, process innovation, problem solving, and decision-making quality.
  • High attention to detail, precision and accuracy at a task specific level.
