About the Role

This role involves reviewing files and documents for criminal or civil cases, identifying pertinent material, and establishing systems for organizing case information. Key responsibilities include assisting in trial preparation, managing legal tasks such as copying and mailing, maintaining pleadings and calendar systems, and ensuring electronic case files are organized and data integrity is maintained. The position also requires searching and extracting legal references, summarizing case precedent, and supporting Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) with discovery, witness management, and evidence organization for trial.

Responsibilities

  • Review files and documents for criminal or civil cases to identify pertinent material and understand issues.
  • Establish and maintain an effective system for compiling, indexing, and organizing case information and sources.
  • Participate and assist in trial preparation by compiling, organizing, and indexing various trial documents.
  • Mark and identify trial documents and draft a list of documents offered at trial.
  • Perform legal tasks including copying, mailing, and closing files.
  • Maintain pleadings and a calendar system for assigned attorneys, tracking due dates for pleadings, hearings, court appearances, and other deadlines.
  • Maintain electronic case files, ensuring they are organized, current, accessible, and retrievable.
  • Maintain integrity of data inputted into the case management system.
  • Search and extract legal references in libraries and computer-data banks.
  • Review and summarize information on case precedent and decisions in a prescribed format.
  • Assist AUSAs by preparing, scheduling, reviewing, and organizing discovery.
  • Notify and manage witnesses.
  • Aid in organizing evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain MRPT facility credentials/authorization.
  • US Citizenship (required for MRPT facility credentials/authorization at this work location).
  • Paralegal certificate OR currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study.
  • One year of legal training or legal experience OR at least two years of college education (may substitute for paralegal certificate).
  • At least one year of litigation paralegal experience or project experience.
  • Basic legal knowledge, including standard legal citation to cite check legal motions and memorandum.
  • Sufficient experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
  • Basic familiarity with ESI tools.
  • Knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
  • Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure.
