About the Role

The Summer Internship candidate will collaborate with our team of RECEs and EAs, reporting directly to the Childcare Program Supervisor. They will lead all aspects within their assigned classroom to provide a culturally relevant childcare curriculum, championing the revitalization of Indigenous languages and cultures within the early years.

Responsibilities

• Brings Nshwaasnangong’s Program Statement to life by reimagining early childhood education and emergent curriculum within an urban Indigenous context.
• Collaborates with centre staff to create and maintain a culturally relevant curriculum within their classroom (Infant, Toddler, Preschool).
• Collaborates with the centre staff to create a flexible daily schedule for their classroom (Infant, Toddler, Preschool).
• Collaborates with the entire team, other RECE’s and EAs to review curriculum, share ideas, assess curriculum and support a positive atmosphere of teamwork.
• Initiates respectful and culturally safe relationships with families, community partners, helpers, Elders and Language keepers.
• Maintains a healthy and safe environment.
• Additional responsibilities and duties as assigned by Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Centre.

Requirements

• Recently graduated from ECE program.
• Able to meet the legislative requirements for working in a licensed childcare setting.
• Obtain/maintain a clean and current vulnerable sector police check as a condition of employment.
• Valid government issued driver’s license or access to reliable transportation.
• Up-to-date immunization and records.
• Willingness to participate in Indigenous Cultural Safety Training, teachings and ceremonies.

Skills

• Demonstrated commitment to language revitalization and reclaiming cultural identities.
• Knowledge of the Indigenous histories, cultures, creation stories, and language of the Indigenous population in the London area.
• Knowledge and experience with licensing under the Childcare Early Years Act.
• Knowledge of Indigenous pedagogical approaches that support How Does Learning Happen, Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
