About the Role
We are seeking an adaptable and organized Avian Caretaker who is motivated by the ethical care of animals and will contribute to the growth of Neion’s research program. This role is based in NYC and involves hands-on care and handling of chickens and quail and collecting samples. This position reports to the Head of Avian Sciences and will require one weekend day shift, as part of a 5-day work schedule (Sunday to Thursday) to ensure continuity of care and study execution.
Responsibilities
- Safely handle chickens and quail in a research setting.
- Work with small flocks at all stages of development, including egg collection, incubation, hatching, and growth of chicks and chickens.
- Work in full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and observe standard operating protocols (SOPs) to protect avian health.
- Contribute to ensuring the health, environmental, nutritional, and social enrichment of flocks.
- Maintain timely and accurate animal and study records.
- Ensure research areas and records meet and exceed IACUC and USDA inspection requirements.
- Communicate with veterinary and animal care staff and promptly report and respond to emergent conditions.
Requirements
- 2+ years experience providing hands-on animal care in a research, small animal clinical, farm, or zoological setting, including direct hands-on avian experience.
- Prior experience incubating and hatching eggs and producing chickens across all life stages (beneficial).
- Ability to work in PPE for up to 3 hours at a time.
- Ability to occasionally move equipment up to 50 lbs.
