About the Role
This position is responsible for underwriting a diverse book of business, employing the methods necessary to meet projected profitability, GWP, and expense goals. The role involves management and growth of the overall portfolio of business within the appropriate underwriting discipline/guidelines, and marketing and servicing of existing and potential insured’s. This role has responsibility for supporting the regional / global head in setting strategic goals, setting budgets and developing the technical underwriting team.
Responsibilities
- Perform general underwriting functions including submission review, pricing analysis, and setting of terms and conditions.
- Authorize quotes and invoices in accordance with company guidelines.
- Ensure timely and correct issuance of bound policies.
- Craft wordings and endorsements for authorization by legal.
- Provide direction to Junior Underwriters and/or Underwriting Assistants in the timely processing of Policy/Endorsement wordings.
- Perform extensive account analysis according to underwriting guidelines, including thorough review of applications/submissions, research, and reviewing requested terms and conditions.
- Liaise with other Company departments to establish a full understanding of risk exposures and complete underwriting worksheets.
- Take an active role in business development in Global Markets, exploring opportunities and marketing within the London Market and abroad.
- Support the regional head departmental Vice President in setting strategic goals, budgets, and producing regular Management Information.
- Maintain underwriting files in an orderly and consistent manner in accordance with underwriting guidelines.
- Liaise with actuarial support to develop premium benchmarking and pricing models.
- Liaise with the Claims Department on specific claim activity and overall market claim concerns.
- Stay current with major market and industry issues and developments.
- Manage external relationships through attendance at client/broker meetings and social events.
- Correspond with brokers regarding outstanding information required for binding.
- Ensure receipt and review of outstanding information to ensure consistency with agreed terms and conditions.
- Delegate and supervise work to Underwriting Operations Assistants or Assistant Underwriters.
- Oversee the professional development and training of assigned team members.
- Manage a specific region's P&L, including budgeting, regional market reporting, client and broker business development, and serving as a point of contact for the designated region.
- Attend Lloyd’s box as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Ideally, a graduate-level individual with a professional insurance qualification, ACII, already obtained.
- An Engineering degree (civil or mechanical engineer) would be preferable.
- Requires 12+ years of demonstrable experience underwriting major international construction projects.
- Requires expertise and in-depth working knowledge of standard market wordings and endorsements.
- Must be highly articulate, with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills for liaison with clients and brokers, delivering presentations, and building relationships.
- Must possess strong marketing and business development capability, commercial acumen, and the ability to influence and negotiate at various levels.
- Highly computer literate with advanced proficiency using an underwriting system.
- Knowledge of Genius and Open Box is a distinct advantage.
- Requires a methodical approach to work with strong organization skills.
- Must be capable of dealing with tight reporting deadlines and conflicting priorities.
- Must possess attention to detail.
- Must be a team player with a collaborative outlook, acting as a role model for junior team members.
