About the Role

Superhuman is building an AI productivity platform, with the back end serving as the intelligence core. Back-End engineers develop systems powering AI agents across the product suite, including scheduling, real-time infrastructure, collaboration engines, and enterprise controls for safe AI deployment. This role involves systems engineering and AI, focusing on building services for agentic workflows, designing infrastructure for custom agents, and solving scaling challenges for AI-powered features across consumer and enterprise customers. Engineers have the freedom to innovate and shape the product roadmap as technical challenges grow with AI feature scaling.

Responsibilities

  • Build and operate high-throughput production services for AI agent orchestration, connector integrations, and real-time data pipelines.
  • Design and build core platform services including task schedulers, session and conversation history, client-server protocols, and APIs connecting the AI engine to product surfaces.
  • Work across the Superhuman product suite (Go, Mail, Docs, or Enterprise) based on team fit.
  • Collaborate with ML/AI, Product, and Front-End engineers to deliver AI-powered features end-to-end.
  • Build and evolve infrastructure as code, ensuring high availability for consumer and enterprise customers.
  • Contribute to an engineering culture emphasizing documentation, testing, and reliability.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in back-end development.
  • Strong fundamentals in algorithms, data structures, and system design.
  • Experience building, deploying, and debugging production systems at scale.
  • Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms (GCP, Azure).
  • Comfort working with AI-powered systems, including infrastructure for LLM-based features, managing agentic workflows, or integrating with ML pipelines.
  • Fluency with AI coding tools (Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, etc.) and understanding their impact on software development.
  • Deep understanding of CI/CD and infrastructure as code.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple project priorities, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong product instincts, balancing end-user experience with speed and reliability.
