About the Role

The Addiction Worker performs a broad range of activities including overnight monitoring, medication witnessing, substance use screening, brief interventions, individual counseling, and liaising with community services. This role ensures building security and monitors the setting during the shift period.

Responsibilities

  • Performs overnight monitoring and assigned tasks
  • Witnesses and documents medication
  • Conducts substance use screening
  • Provides brief interventions
  • Offers individual counseling, information, and referral
  • Promotes health
  • Utilizes EMHware to record case notes
  • Liaises with community and allied services, resources, partners, and referral sources
  • Prepares and updates templates and group programming handouts
  • Ensures the security of the buildings and kitchen at night
  • Checks the status of the defibrillators
  • Monitors the setting during the shift period

Requirements

  • University or College Degree in a related field OR equivalent education and related work experience
  • Demonstrated experience in addictions work, supportive counseling, and brief intervention
  • Demonstrated experience in motivational interviewing
  • Demonstrated experience with crisis management and de-escalation
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to commencing employment

Skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge of issues related to addiction, concurrent disorder, mental health, trauma, and recovery
  • Knowledge and understanding of community addiction and mental health case management services
  • Knowledge of the spectrum of harm reduction and abstinence approaches to problematic substance use
  • Experience with EHMware (asset)
  • Understanding and commitment to health equity, diversity, and inclusivity
  • Experience utilizing various approaches to substance use and recovery
  • Skilled in managing individuals who are anxious or escalated
  • Strong crisis de-escalation skills
  • Experience and skills working with individuals affected by poverty, violence, homelessness, institutionalization, stigma, racism, and/or homophobia/transphobia
  • Knowledge of the impact of social/cultural/economic factors on the determinants of health
  • Knowledge, understanding, and sensitivity to the complexity of issues arising for individuals who have experienced homelessness, addictions, poverty, and/or mental illness
  • Ability to work collaboratively within and across interdisciplinary teams and community partners
  • Ability to work with clients presenting with a wide range of mental health issues
  • Demonstrated flexibility, sound judgment, initiative, and creativity
  • Demonstrated capacity to thrive and engage in a dynamic and changing work environment
  • Experience working within an anti-oppression and trauma-informed framework
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications
  • Experience working in a residential setting (asset)
  • Additional training in screening, assessment, and treatment related to concurrent disorder and trauma (asset)
  • Proficiency and ability to work in both French and English (asset)
  • Ability to work in a language in addition to English (asset)

Work Type

  • 32 hours/week
  • Monday to Thursday, 12am-8am

Education Level

  • University or College Degree in a related field OR equivalent education and related work experience

Salary/Compensations

  • $41,547 plus benefits and pension
