About the Role
The Temporary Nurse Manager reports to the Director of Care and is responsible for the overall provision of care and services to residents, coordination of the quality management program, and acts as a resource and coach to team members in various clinical areas. This role ensures compliance with legislative requirements and promotes best practices.
Responsibilities
- Provides direction to the nursing team in all aspects of resident care, participates in developing/improving nursing processes and practices, and acts as "In Charge" in the absence of the Director of Care.
- Interprets nursing philosophy and, in collaboration with the Director of Care and nursing team, establishes and implements goals and objectives.
- Holds Registered Staff and monthly PSW meetings for assigned home areas regularly.
- Models, listens, and assists with conflict and problem resolution.
- Maintains care records emphasizing and measuring a daily person-centered approach.
- Monitors and supports the nursing team with development, implementation, and auditing of resident plans of care.
- Supervises and monitors Personal Support Workers' performance and resident routines and activities.
- Maintains an active presence in resident home areas, including mentoring/coaching team members for quality resident care.
- Addresses resident/family concerns and follows up to resolve issues.
- Provides leadership and support to team members in RAI-MDS implementation.
- Assists with the recruitment, retention, and termination of nursing employees.
- Participates in the performance management system for nursing employees.
- Adheres to human resources policies when recruiting and hiring new employees.
- Adheres to the collective agreement when implementing human resources policies.
- Has a good understanding of staffing patterns and scheduling activities.
- Counsels team members on non-compliance, inappropriate, and unprofessional behavior, utilizing the progressive disciplinary process.
- Assists with submission/amendments of the critical incident reporting system and follows through on corrective action plans.
- Monitors supply budgets to ensure effective management.
- Monitors agency utilization.
- Follows through on areas/issues identified through the QI program.
- Provides education/coaching to team members regarding changes in practices.
- Conducts regular clinical chart audits to ensure compliance with documentation standards, internal policies, procedures, and legislative requirements.
- Identifies potential liability issues and takes action to minimize risks.
- Understands the nature and meaning of quality indicators used by the Home.
- Participates in the improvement of quality indicators and achieves satisfactory results.
- Conducts safety walkabouts, addresses concerns with health and safety work practices, and ensures compliance with a safe and secure environment.
- Sits on Committees and co-chairs/chairs.
- Coordinates assigned clinical programs.
- Collects stats, collates data including analysis, identification of trends, education, and recommends changes to practices.
- Participates in an on-call rotation and responds as required.
- Performs any and all other tasks as assigned.
Requirements

- Current Certificate of Competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse or a Registered Nurse registered with a regulatory authority in a Canadian jurisdiction, other than Ontario, and holds the equivalent of a certificate of registration authorizing independent practice in Ontario as of right exemption Bill 60.
- Comprehensive knowledge of evidence-based clinical practices.
- Comprehensive knowledge of long-term care concepts and philosophies.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Previous managerial experience and/or floor nurse experience in a long-term care setting is an asset.
- Contributes to policy and program development.
- Good computer skills.
- Ability to be non-judgmental towards others.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, motivate, lead, and support team members.
- Must have a clear vulnerable sector screen (no older than 6 months).
- Must have TB results (less than 6 months).
- Must provide evidence of flu shot.
- Must be able to provide three work references.
