About the Role
Substrate is building autonomous wet labs for AI biology, integrated with foundation models to serve as critical infrastructure for AI-driven biological discovery. This role involves writing production code, shaping architecture, and influencing the growth of the intelligence software product team.
Responsibilities
- Write production code for AI Scientist and AI Assays.
- Help shape the architecture of the intelligence software product.
- Influence the engineering culture, including code review, evaluation, and deployment practices.
- Set up data capture infrastructure for AI Assays and define feedback paths.
- Bring AI Scientist into production and integrate its outputs with R&D capacity allocation.
- Help shape the technical roadmap for the intelligence team.
- Ship the first version of AI Assays and connect protocol optimization suggestions.
- Scope the third intelligence product.
- Transition from primarily writing code to coordinating the intelligence team's work.
Requirements
- Five or more years of professional software engineering experience.
- Direct experience putting LLMs, foundation models, or agentic systems into production at scale.
- Working comfort with the LLM harness layer: token economics, retrieval, evaluation, structured output, and large-scale data processing.
- Strong working comfort with Python.
- Track record of designing systems that other engineers built on top of.
- Experience in or near biology, biotech, scientific computing, or a research environment.
- Experience as an early-stage founding engineer at a venture-backed company.
- Background near LIMS, ELN, or scientific data infrastructure systems.
- Ability to talk back and disagree constructively.
- Pragmatic approach to agentic systems and foundation models.
